ABOUT

Designated in 2020 by the Federal Aviation Administration, Exploration Spaceport at Space Coast Regional Airport is licensed by the FAA’s Office of Spaceports for horizontal launch and landing activities. Obtaining a spaceport license is a complex task, and, as such, there are only 14 licensed spaceports in the country.

Although the majority of spaceports are licensed by the FAA and/or other federal agencies such as NASA or the United States Space Force, there are only two spaceports, both situated in Texas, that are referred to as Private/Exclusive Use and are overseen by the commercial space industry titans, Space X and Blue Origin. Currently, and not surprisingly, Florida leads the nation with six spaceports, all of which are located on the east coast. For additional information on spaceports throughout the country, please refer to this list of spaceports.

Exploration Spaceport is owned by and operated under the expertise of the Titusville-Cocoa Airport Authority (Authority). A three-airport and one-spaceport system, the Authority is governed by a seven-member Board of Directors that are appointed by the Brevard County Board of Commissioners and the City of Titusville City Council. Airports include Space Coast Regional Airport (TIX) and Arthur Dunn Airpark (X21), both of which are located in Titusville, as well as Merritt Island Airport (COI), which is situated in unincorporated Brevard County.
