LICENSING

In 2018, the Federal Aviation Authority’s Office of Spaceports was created by the 2018 FAA Authorization Act. The mission of the Office of Spaceports is to enable the safest, most efficient network of launch and reentry spaceports in the world, while its vision seeks to advance a robust innovative national system of spaceports supporting the United States as a global leader in the commercial space transportation industry. In order to achieve its goals, the Office of Spaceports has established a variety of strategic objectives.

At Space Coast Regional Airport, what is now referred to as Exploration Spaceport was licensed by the FAA in 2020 for horizontal launch and landing activities. Obtaining a spaceport license, regardless of whether it is vertical, horizontal, or a hybrid, is an arduous process that can take several years to accomplish. As such, Exploration Spaceport at Space Coast Regional Airport is one of only 14 FAA-licensed spaceports in the United States.
